Title: The Human Factor

Original Air Date: 09/22/1986 on ABC

Director: Charlie Correll
Writer: Robin Bernheim

Guest Stars: Peter Haskell (Col. Scott Woodward), Peter Kwong (Steven Lee)

Plot Outline:

MacGyver is sent to test the security of a top secret and incredibly complex military installation. The military requested the Phoenix Foundation to test the system. Of course, Pete insisits to Col. Woodward, his Vietnam War partner, that if MacGyver couldn't beat the system, no one could. Dr. Jill Ludlum, the designer of the completely automated computer security system, makes a bet with MacGyver that he can't get in. She insists that no humans will be needed after the tests are complete, thus eliminating "The Human Factor." However, MacGyver breaks in fairly easily and surprises Jill in the second floor physics lab. Jill, surprised and a little disappointed, orders the system to shut down for the night. However, the computer picks up MacGyver's voice, and, recognizing an unauthorized voice, senses an intruder and immediately goes to a level one security alert. Jill's voice is no longer helpful as the computer will not recognize the manual voice override. The computer, ironically, goes into its "Artificial Intelligence" mode that it was designed for, and seals off all exits, trapping Jill and MacGyver inside. Worse yet, the computer activates a level two alert and begins creating a vacuum. MacGyver and Jill are trapped, with a computer determined to destroy them and only 30 minutes of oxygen remaining. Now, MacGyver and Jill must think of a way to beat Jill's own system, while relying on Pete and Col. Woodward to help them from the outside. Jill and MacGyver can't get to the control room, the only hope of disabling the super-computer. Meanwhile, Pete and Woodward are arguing over what to do, just as they did in Vietnam. Pete suggests immediate action, but Woodward hesitates to do anything without official approval. Can Pete and Woodward put aside their differences and figure out a way to save Jill and MacGyver before it is too late...?
